When your supply feels lower, suddenly everything looks suspicious…

Was it the three hours of sleep?
Skipping breakfast?
Forgetting to drink water until 2 pm?
The stress about being stressed?
That one coffee? ☕

Or the fact that baby has basically been attached to you all day?

Milk supply can fluctuate for many reasons, and one difficult day does not automatically mean your supply has disappeared.

Before blaming one food, drink or moment, look at the bigger picture, including how often baby is feeding, how effectively milk is being removed, your overall food and fluid intake, illness, medications and hormonal changes.

Comment LATCH to learn more about personalised support through Let’s Get Latched 🤍

When a mum tells me her milk supply has suddenly changed, I do not jump straight to lactation cookies, teas or supplements.

I first look at the basics that can easily get missed when you are feeding around the clock:

🍽️ Are you eating enough across the day, or are meals regularly being skipped?
💧 Are you drinking consistently, or only trying to catch up once you feel exhausted and thirsty?
🤱 How often is your baby feeding, and are they transferring milk effectively during those feeds?
🩸 Have your iron levels been checked recently, especially if you are also feeling unusually tired, weak, dizzy or breathless?
Milk supply can be affected by many factors, so it is important to look at your full feeding picture rather than relying on one food or quick fix.

Let’s Get Latched provides personalised breastfeeding support to help you understand what may be affecting your supply and what to focus on next. 🩷

Cluster feeding can feel relentless, especially when feeds seem to roll into one another all afternoon or evening.

It does not automatically mean you are not making enough milk.

Babies may feed more frequently during growth spurts, developmental changes or when they are helping build your supply. 🥛

Set yourself up with water, easy snacks, the TV remote and everything else you might need within arm’s reach. 💧🍫📺

Breastfeeding mums are absolutely tired of hearing these. 🙃

And look, most of the time these comments come from people who genuinely love you and want to help. But when you are already feeding around the clock, second guessing your supply, and trying to figure out what your baby needs, the wrong words at the wrong moment can send you into a spiral that takes days to climb out of. 😮‍💨

Because here is the thing 👉 breastfeeding is already hard enough without also having to filter through advice that makes you doubt every single feed.

What you actually need is support that helps you understand what is happening in your body, recognise the signs that feeding is going well, and know when it is worth reaching out for extra help.

Not comments that make you question yourself more than you already do.

You deserve accurate information and real support. Not guesswork from people who mean well. 💗

The third trimester can start to feel like one long list of things to organise, buy, pack and remember 😅

You do not need to finish everything in one weekend. A few small tasks can make the final weeks feel much more manageable.

Make a hospital bag checklist, keep easy snacks nearby, freeze a few meals and focus on one baby prep job at a time. It can also help to write down who you can call when you need practical support, reassurance or help getting to an appointment 🤰✨

Small steps still count. You are preparing, even when it does not all happen at once.

That intense thirst during a feed is very real.

Your body uses extra fluid to make breastmilk, so it is normal to feel thirstier while breastfeeding. Some mums notice it most strongly as soon as their baby latches, which can feel like your body has remembered every drink you have not had all day 🤱

A few simple ways to stay on top of it:
💧 Keep a full water bottle beside your usual feeding spot
🥛 Have a drink with meals and snacks
🧊 Refill your bottle before you sit down to feed
🍉 Include hydrating foods such as fruit, yoghurt and soups
🚰 Drink to thirst rather than forcing huge amounts at once

You do not need a perfect hydration routine. Having water within reach every time you feed can make a big difference!

Breastfeeding isn’t hard…

You only need to remember which side you fed from, watch for hunger cues, check the latch, keep baby awake, drink enough water, eat enough food, burp them, settle them, wash the pump parts and somehow get some sleep too 🙃

Oh, and everyone will have an opinion on how often, how long and where your baby should feed.

Completely straightforward, really 😅🩷

Feeling exhausted while breastfeeding can be easy to put down to broken sleep and the demands of caring for a baby 😴 But if the tiredness feels intense or comes with brain fog, breathlessness, heart palpitations, feeling cold, pale skin or a low mood, it may be worth having your iron levels checked 🩸

Pregnancy, birth and postpartum blood loss can all affect your iron stores, and breastfeeding mums still need enough iron to support their own energy, concentration and recovery ⚡️🧠

These symptoms do not always mean low iron, so avoid starting a high-dose supplement without checking first. Speak with your GP and ask whether a blood test may be appropriate 🩺✨
