Despite our current (scientific) knowledge about how diet affects the quality of breastmilk, there's still some controversy and misconception about this topic. Some may say that it doesn’t matter what mums eat, breast milk composition is fixed, and it won't change. Some mums might also feel a lot of pressure with the need to eat perfectly in order to make good quality milk, and in the end, this fear might be one of the reasons that women stop nursing their babies. ⁠

The concept with breastfeeding nutrition is that mum's don't need to follow a perfect diet all the time – she will still produce quality breastmilk. However, the nutritional composition does change based on a mother’s nutrient stores and diet. So, by aiming to eat a nutrient-dense diet, a mum will automatically optimize her nutrient intake and stores, which in turn supply the nutrients needed for babies. It will also ensure mothers have the proper building blocks to recover from labour for future pregnancies, and prevent other health issues later on in life.⁠

There are several nutrients in mum’s milk that are dependent on a mother's diet. For example, vitamin A, water-soluble vitamins such as vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6, vitamin B12; iodine, selenium, vitamin D and choline, as well as fatty acids such as DHA which are key nutrients for neurological and eye development of the baby.⁠

“Self-care is often a very unbeautiful thing.
It is making a spreadsheet of your debt & enforcing a routine & cooking yourself healthy meals & no longer just running from your problems & calling the distraction a solution. It is often doing the ugliest thing that you have to do, like sweat through another workout or tell a toxic friend you don’t want to see them anymore or get a second job so you can have a savings account or figure out a way to accept yourself so that you’re not constantly exhausted from trying to be everything, all the time & then needing to take deliberate, mandated breaks from living to do basic things like drop some oil into a bath and read Marie Claire & turn your phone off for the day. A world in which self-care has to be such a trendy topic is a world that is sick. Self-care should not be something we resort to because we are so exhausted that we need reprieve from our own relentless internal pressure. True self-care is not salt baths & chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from. & that often takes doing the thing you least want to do. It is not satiating your immediate desires. It is letting go. It is choosing new.
It is letting yourself be normal. Regular. Unexceptional. It is sometimes having a dirty kitchen & deciding your ultimate goal in life isn’t going to be having abs. It is deciding how much of your anxiety comes from not actualizing your latent potential, & how much comes from the way you were being trained to think before you even knew what was happening. It is no longer using your hectic & unreasonable life as justification for self-sabotage in the form of liquor & procrastination. It is learning how to stop trying to “fix yourself” and start trying to take care of yourself. It means being the hero of your life, not the victim. It is no longer choosing a life that looks good over a life that feels good. It is giving the hell up on some goals so you can care about others. It is becoming the person you know you want and are meant to be. Someone who knows that salt baths & chocolate cake are ways to enjoy life – not escape from it.”

An easy or mellow baby responds to the everyday commotion, loud noises, exhaustion and hunger with a smile. They have no trouble managing day-to-day life. An easy baby helps you feel like a successful parent. ⁣⁣⁣

A sensitive baby, on the other hand, is very touchy. The doorbell rings causing tears, and once they start, they’re hard to stop. A touchy baby is interested in his new world, he just can’t always handle it. ⁣⁣⁣

The journey and care with our babies doesn’t end at twelve months! Have you heard about the first 1000 days of life? This is an important period in our baby’s life where the environment, mum’s health, eating habits, and diet will influence their health in the long term. ⁠

During the toddler years, your child is going to set their food preferences, patterns of healthy nutrition and physical activity. One way to create good food habits is to involve our children in food preparation and cooking. Having good nutrition habits as parents and eating meals together will be a great example for our kids!⁠

It’s important to offer all food groups with a focus on fruit and vegetables, which are important sources of vital micronutrients. Healthy fats are still important, as well as iron food sources.⁠

Water is the best you can offer to your kids during the day. Try to limit fruit juices and avoid sugary drinks. Sugar is associated with childhood obesity... Did you know that more than 60% of children who are overweight at this stage will remain obese as an adult? So, prevention is the key here!⁠
