🌸 Hi, I'm Kristy! I'm a mum and dietitian who’s travelled the world, helping other mama's give their little ones the best start in life 🌎

But when I became a mum myself, I quickly learned that birth and breastfeeding aren't always as "natural" as we’re led to believe…

After experiencing my own birth trauma, my first week of breastfeeding was a struggle. I pumped, breastfed, and topped up my baby, but his growth still faltered. It was a long 10 months, and it opened my eyes to how little support mums receive.

I realised that so many women, like me, are going into birth and breastfeeding unprepared and overwhelmed 🥀

That’s why I chose this path in nutrition—to empower mums with evidence-based information and help them make confident, informed choices for both themselves and their babies.

My mission is to help prevent birth trauma and make sure that every mama feels prepared for this journey, no matter how tough it gets 💪

There's some controversy about how diet affects the quality of breastmilk. Some may say that it doesn’t matter what mums eat, breast milk composition is fixed, & it won't change. Some mums might also feel a lot of pressure with the need to eat perfectly in order to make good quality milk, & in the end, this fear might be one of the reasons that women stop nursing their babies.

Mums don't need to follow a perfect diet all the time – quality breastmilk is still produced. However, the nutritional composition DOES change based on a mother’s nutrient stores & diet. By aiming to eat a nutrient-dense diet, a mum will automatically *optimize* her nutrient intake & stores, which in turn supply the nutrients needed for babies. It will also ensure mothers have the proper building blocks to recover from labour for future pregnancies, & prevent future health issues.

There are several nutrients in mum’s milk that are dependent on diet:
✅Vitamin A,
✅B vitamins
✅Iodine,
✅Selenium,
✅Vitamin D
✅Choline
✅DHA fatty acids

These nutrients are essential for your newborn, your own health & recovery after labour. They are widely found amongst all food groups, so, as long as you eat a healthy & balanced diet, & avoid unhealthy and unnecessary restrictions in your diet, you’re going to meet most of your nutrient requirements. However, due to the high demand for nutrients during this time, some may need to be boosted with supplements. It is important to follow up with a Dietitian to ensure you are replenishing your nutrient stores from pregnancy, delivery & breastfeeding. Check out my blog on Vitamin D too! Link in bio.

“Self-care is often a very unbeautiful thing.⁠
It is making a spreadsheet of your debt & enforcing a routine & cooking yourself healthy meals & no longer just running from your problems & calling the distraction a solution. It is often doing the ugliest thing that you have to do, like sweat through another workout or tell a toxic friend you don’t want to see them anymore or get a second job so you can have a savings account or figure out a way to accept yourself so that you’re not constantly exhausted from trying to be everything, all the time & then needing to take deliberate, mandated breaks from living to do basic things like drop some oil into a bath and read Marie Claire & turn your phone off for the day. A world in which self-care has to be such a trendy topic is a world that is sick. Self-care should not be something we resort to because we are so exhausted that we need reprieve from our own relentless internal pressure. True self-care is not salt baths & chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from. & that often takes doing the thing you least want to do. It is not satiating your immediate desires. It is letting go. It is choosing new.⁠
It is letting yourself be normal. Regular. Unexceptional. It is sometimes having a dirty kitchen & deciding your ultimate goal in life isn’t going to be having abs. It is deciding how much of your anxiety comes from not actualizing your latent potential, & how much comes from the way you were being trained to think before you even knew what was happening. It is no longer using your hectic & unreasonable life as justification for self-sabotage in the form of liquor & procrastination. It is learning how to stop trying to “fix yourself” and start trying to take care of yourself. It means being the hero of your life, not the victim. It is no longer choosing a life that looks good over a life that feels good. It is giving the hell up on some goals so you can care about others. It is becoming the person you know you want and are meant to be. Someone who knows that salt baths & chocolate cake are ways to enjoy life – not escape from it.”⁠

Repost • @breastfeeding.dietitian "BABY-LED LATCHING. Usually the way latching is talked about is the “mother-led” latch. But there is also “baby-led” latching. One is not better than the other. Each are skills that you learn and having BOTH skills is helpful for you AND your baby in overcoming breastfeeding challenges!⁠

Baby-Led Latching, also called “Biological Nurturing”, is where you work with your baby and support their instinctive behaviour to seek the breast. Your baby uses their arms and body to bob, bounce and almost throw themselves (or gently fall) towards the breast. It’s actually pretty amazing. .⁠

What promotes Baby-Led Latching?⁠
👶 Be tummy to tummy and skin to skin with your baby in a reclined or laid back position (use pillows - more than in my pic 😂 - to support your body and arms to support your baby). 👶 Patience and support to allow your baby to search for and attach to your breast.⁠

When might affect your baby’s ability to self-latch?⁠
👶 Birth practices, like medications or interventions, etc. - where these things can affect your baby’s sucking patterns.⁠
👶 Anatomy or structure issues, like a tongue tie, palate problems, cleft lip, flat/inverted nipples, weak muscles, etc. - where these things can affect your baby’s ability to effectively remove milk from your breast.⁠

This is where Mother-Led Latching is useful - when breastfeeding doesn’t happen on it’s own (like in the above situations or when your baby just may like a little extra help/support from you - which is OK! You both are a TEAM 🙌🏻). .⁠

Just because Baby-Led Latching isn’t working doesn’t mean it will never work - being skin to skin with your baby in a relaxed position (for both you and baby) can help your baby return back to their instinctual behaviours."⁠
